Climbing the mountain through sport: a summer of teamwork, resilience and success

Posted 29th June 2026

At Dixons Trinity Chapeltown, we believe that education extends far beyond the four walls of the classroom. Every lesson, every enrichment opportunity and every challenge our students embrace plays a part in preparing them to climb the mountain towards university, or a real alternative, thriving in a top job and having a great life. Sport is one of the many ways our students develop the qualities that will support them throughout that journey. It teaches resilience when things don't go to plan, humility in victory, determination in defeat and the importance of working together towards a shared goal. Whether competing for medals, learning an entirely new skill or representing the academy for the very first time, our students continue to demonstrate that success is measured not only by results, but by the character they display along the way.

The past few weeks have been an incredibly busy and exciting time for our Health and Sports Department, with students representing Dixons Trinity Chapeltown across cricket, rowing and athletics. Across every event, they embodied our values of hard work, trust and fairness, while demonstrating the drivers of mastery, autonomy and purpose that underpin everything we do.

Cricket Success at Bradford Park Cricket Ground

One of the highlights of the summer saw our Year 10 girls and Year 9/10 boys travel to Bradford Park Cricket Ground to compete in an exciting day of competitive cricket against schools from across the region.

Representing the academy were Afrah, Aribah, Aishah, Afiya, Sadia and Victoria from Year 10, alongside Sayed, Hamayoun, Abdi, Hani, Mohammed M, Cassius, Haaris and Arlind from Years 9 and 10.

Across six challenging fixtures, both teams demonstrated remarkable determination, resilience and teamwork. Our boys showed tremendous commitment throughout the competition. Cricket is a game that demands patience, communication and trust, and every student rose to the challenge. Their fielding improved with every match, working collectively to apply pressure, support one another and secure valuable wickets. Although they finished sixth overall, the progress they made throughout the day and the positivity they showed never wavered.

Meanwhile, our girls produced an outstanding series of performances in the indoor nets. Facing six different schools, they displayed impressive consistency with both bat and ball, combining accurate bowling with disciplined fielding and excellent communication. Their teamwork and determination earned them an exceptional second-place finish overall, narrowly missing out on first place.

While we are incredibly proud of these sporting achievements, what stood out even more was the way every student represented our academy. At the conclusion of every match, our students congratulated their opponents, shook hands with officials and recognised good performances from other teams. These simple but important moments reflected our commitment to fairness, reminding us that true success is measured not only by the scoreboard but by the respect we show others.

Learning Beyond the Classroom at Roundhay Lake

Sport is also about embracing new experiences, stepping outside your comfort zone and discovering strengths you never knew you had. Our Year 7 and 8 students recently enjoyed an unforgettable expedition to Roundhay Lake, where they were introduced to the exciting challenge of rowing. For many students, this was their very first experience of being out on the water in a quad boat. What initially seemed daunting quickly became an opportunity to build confidence, trust and resilience.

Rowing is far more than simply pulling an oar through the water. It requires complete synchronisation, communication and mutual trust. Every member of the crew must work together with precision, matching timing, rhythm and effort to move the boat efficiently. Students quickly discovered that individual success means very little unless everyone works together towards the same goal.

As the day progressed, confidence grew with every stroke. Students developed new technical skills, supported one another through challenges and celebrated each small success together. Watching students encourage teammates, offer reassurance and work collaboratively demonstrated exactly what it means to live our values every single day. The beautiful summer weather made the experience even more memorable. Alongside developing their rowing skills, students enjoyed spending time outdoors, appreciating the natural environment and even feeding the lake's wildlife, including several adorable cygnets who quickly became firm favourites. Learning experiences like these remind us that some of the most powerful lessons happen beyond the classroom. Students developed independence, confidence and resilience while strengthening friendships that will continue long after the day itself.

Outstanding Performances at the Dixons Cup Athletics Competition

Students also travelled to Manchester to compete in the annual Dixons Cup Athletics Competition, joining students from across the Dixons family of schools in a celebration of sporting excellence, teamwork and healthy competition. Competing against some of the strongest athletes across the Trust is never an easy task, but our students rose to the occasion magnificently.

Throughout the day, they represented Dixons Trinity Chapeltown with pride, determination and humility. Every race, jump and throw was met with encouragement from teammates, creating an atmosphere that celebrated effort every bit as much as achievement.

We are incredibly proud to celebrate the following outstanding individual performances:

  • Year 7 - Esa Miah: 2nd place in the 200 metres
  • Year 8 - Jahmai: 1st place in the 200 metres
  • Year 10 - Tiamo: 2nd place in the 100 metres
  • Year 10 - Jaji: 2nd place in the 400 metres and 3rd place in the long jump
  • Year 10 - Khadijah: 1st place in the 200 metres
  • Year 10 - Giovanna: 1st place in the 400 metres
  • Year 10 - Nihal: 2nd place in the triple jump
  • Year 10 - Sadia: 1st place in the triple jump

These achievements are a testament to the dedication our students have shown throughout the year. Behind every medal is countless hours of training, perseverance and commitment, qualities that will serve them far beyond the athletics track.

As a school community, we are incredibly proud of every student who has represented Dixons Trinity Chapeltown over the past few weeks. Whether returning home with medals, trying a new activity for the first time or simply encouraging a teammate to keep going, every student has contributed to a summer that truly reflects who we are as an academy. We look forward to seeing where their sporting journeys take them next and cannot wait to celebrate even more successes in the year ahead.
