Finding their voice: Year 9 students begin inspiring partnership with Girlguiding

Posted 22nd June 2026

At Dixons Trinity Chapeltown, we believe that every young person deserves to feel heard, valued and empowered to become the very best version of themselves. While academic excellence remains at the heart of everything we do, we know that climbing the mountain to university, or a real alternative, thriving in a top job and having a great life requires much more than outstanding qualifications. It requires confidence, resilience, compassion and the courage to use your voice.

That is why we were delighted to welcome Martha and Helen from Girlguiding to work with a group of our Year 9 girls as part of an exciting new programme focused on wellbeing, confidence and positive relationships.

Girlguiding is the UK's largest youth organisation dedicated completely to girls. Through friendship, challenge and adventure, the organisation creates spaces where girls can discover their strengths, build confidence, develop leadership skills and find their voice. Their mission to help girls know that they can do anything resonates strongly with our own belief that every student should develop the knowledge, character and ambition to achieve their full potential. The workshop marked the beginning of what we hope will become an ongoing partnership, providing regular opportunities for our students to come together in a safe, supportive environment where they can speak openly, learn from one another and build lasting friendships.

For many young people, the teenage years can be both exciting and challenging. Navigating friendships, expectations and growing independence is not always straightforward, and finding the confidence to express thoughts and feelings can sometimes feel daunting. At Dixons Trinity Chapeltown, we understand that supporting students' social, emotional and mental wellbeing is fundamental to helping them flourish, both inside and outside the classroom. Creating opportunities such as these reflects our commitment to developing the whole child. Alongside our knowledge-rich curriculum, we strive to cultivate the qualities that will enable our students to lead fulfilling lives long after they leave our academy.

The session began by placing ownership firmly in the hands of the students. Rather than being presented with a list of rules, the girls worked collaboratively to establish the expectations that would shape their shared space. Together they agreed that everyone should listen carefully when others were speaking, respect different opinions even when they disagreed, maintain appropriate boundaries and contribute towards creating an environment built on kindness, honesty and mutual respect. This immediately gave students autonomy, one of the three key drivers that underpin everything we do. By empowering students to shape the culture of the group themselves, they developed a genuine sense of ownership and responsibility for ensuring everyone felt safe, included and able to contribute.

Throughout the workshop, students participated in a range of carefully planned activities designed to encourage reflection, empathy and meaningful discussion. One particularly powerful activity invited students to respond anonymously to a series of thought-provoking questions using post-it notes. Questions such as "What's something in your week that makes things a little easier?" and "What would you like to say to a teacher about making school an even better place?" encouraged honest reflection without fear of judgement. The anonymous nature of the activity created an atmosphere of openness and trust. Students quickly realised that many of the thoughts, worries and hopes they carried individually were shared by others around the room. This simple exercise reminded everyone that they were not alone and that every voice mattered.

The workshop also provided valuable opportunities for students to work alongside peers they may not usually spend time with during the school day. As conversations developed, so too did new friendships, stronger relationships and a greater appreciation of the different experiences within their own year group. Watching students encourage one another, celebrate one another's contributions and offer thoughtful support demonstrated our core values of trust and fairness in action. Experiences like these demonstrate that education extends far beyond the classroom. Every conversation, every relationship and every opportunity to grow contributes to our shared mission of helping students become confident, compassionate and successful young adults.

We are incredibly grateful to Martha and Helen for delivering such an engaging and inspiring first session. Their warmth, expertise and commitment created an environment where every student felt encouraged to contribute, and the positive impact of the workshop was evident long after it had finished. As we look ahead to the next session, we are excited to continue strengthening this partnership and to see our students grow in confidence with each opportunity they are given.
