GCSE exam stress: how can we help?

Posted 6th May 2026

GCSE exam season can be a demanding time for young people and for the families supporting them. At Dixons Trinity Chapeltown, we know that success during this period is not only about revision plans and exam technique; it is also about protecting students’ wellbeing, building confidence and helping them stay calm under pressure. As ever, we remain committed to doing whatever it takes to ensure every student is supported to achieve their full potential.

For many students, some nerves are a normal part of exam season. A little anxiety can help students stay focused, but too much pressure can affect sleep, concentration and confidence. Parents and carers play a vital role in helping young people keep things in perspective. The most powerful support often comes from creating a calm, steady home environment where children feel listened to, reassured and encouraged to do their best without feeling overwhelmed.

One of the most important things families can do is look out for signs that stress may be building. These can include changes in sleep, irritability, headaches, low mood, loss of appetite or feeling overwhelmed. If your child seems more anxious than usual, regular check-ins and calm conversations can make a real difference. Listening without judgement, acknowledging how they feel and reminding them that exams matter but do not define them can help reduce pressure and build resilience.

Simple routines can also have a significant impact on wellbeing. Encouraging a good night’s sleep, regular movement, healthy meals and short breaks between revision sessions can help students stay mentally and physically well. Small habits such as reducing late-night cramming, getting outside for fresh air and planning time to switch off can improve focus and help students feel more in control.

It is equally important to keep revision supportive rather than stressful. Parents do not need to become subject experts. The most valuable support often comes from helping students stay organised, encouraging them to revisit revision plans, testing them on key knowledge if helpful, and praising effort over perfection. Small moments of encouragement, reassurance and consistency can go a long way in helping young people feel confident and capable.

At Dixons Trinity Chapeltown, staff will be doing their best to support students every step of the way. Our teachers and pastoral teams are continuing to provide expert guidance, calm reassurance and targeted support in the classroom and beyond. From carefully sequenced revision and responsive teaching to pastoral check-ins and wellbeing support, we are working in partnership with families to help students feel prepared, supported and successful throughout the exam period.

As always, we encourage families to speak with us if they have concerns about how their child is coping. Strong partnerships between home and school make a real difference, and by working together we can help every student approach this exam season with confidence, perspective and the support they need to thrive.
