Our 'poppy island' is in full bloom!

Posted 19th November 2025

Our Year 7 and 9 classes have put their pottery skills to the test and have made a beautiful collection of hand-crafted clay poppies for our annual installation for Remembrance Day (11th November).

Sometimes known as 'Poppy Day', Remembrance Day is celebrated annually by Britain and those within the Commonwealth since the end of the first World War to honour those in the armed forces who have died during duty. In 1918, the hostilities ended at the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month, and ended formally in 1919. Poppies were chosen as the emblem as these flowers grew on the fields where soldiers fought, and are regularly worn as a visual pledge to never forget the sacrifices they and their families made.

Each flower was painted, given a 'stem', planted on our ‘Poppy Island’ and added to the previous years’ total to create a bountiful bouquet, commemorating those who have fought or passed away in war. The students should be incredibly proud of their work and for supporting a cause close to many people’s hearts. Well done Year 7 and 9!
