Ullswater residential: Year 7 & 8 rise to the challenge!

Posted 30th March 2026

Students from Years 7 and 8 recently embarked on an unforgettable residential visit to Ullswater in the Lake District, delivered in partnership with The Outward Bound Trust. Across two three-day blocks (Makalu and Aconcagua from Monday to Wednesday, followed by Pelvoux and Tafelberg from Wednesday to Friday), students experienced a truly transformative adventure in one of the UK’s most breathtaking natural environments.

Set against the dramatic backdrop of mountains and lakes, the residential provided students with the opportunity to step outside their comfort zones and fully embrace challenge. Over the course of the trip, every student quite literally “climbed a mountain”, embodying the academy’s belief in overcoming obstacles and striving for excellence.

The itinerary was packed with demanding and rewarding activities. Students took part in rafting, sailing, orienteering and gorge scrambling, as well as the well-known ‘jog and dip’, which tested both their physical and mental resilience. Each activity required focus, courage and collaboration, encouraging students to push beyond what they thought possible while supporting one another throughout.

Throughout the residential, students consistently demonstrated the core values of respect, integrity and determination. They conducted themselves impeccably, showing maturity and kindness in all interactions. Whether encouraging a peer during a challenging climb or working together to navigate unfamiliar terrain, students showed that they understand what it means to treat others as they wish to be treated and to always do the right thing. A particular highlight of the trip was the way in which students came together as a team. Living and working alongside peers and staff allowed them to build strong, lasting relationships. Barriers were broken down, new friendships were formed, and students developed a genuine sense of belonging and community. Staff were incredibly proud of how students collaborated, communicated and supported one another, especially when faced with physically and mentally demanding challenges.

The residential also brought to life the academy’s key drivers of mastery, autonomy and purpose. Students showed a clear commitment to improving their skills, took ownership of their decisions and actions, and recognised that their efforts contributed to the success of the whole team. These experiences will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on their personal development and approach to learning.  Above all, students displayed exceptional resilience. They approached every challenge with a positive mindset, refused to give up when things became difficult, and celebrated their achievements together. By the end of the residential, it was clear that every student had grown in confidence, independence and self-belief.

This year’s Ullswater residential was a powerful reminder that, when students are given the opportunity to challenge themselves in a supportive environment, they can achieve extraordinary things.
