Year 10 take part in a screen printing workshop ran by Leeds Arts University!

At Dixons Trinity Chapeltown, a culture of high expectations and purposeful learning continues to shape enriching opportunities for every student. Recently, Year 10 GCSE art students took part in an inspiring screen-printing workshop led by Jayne Everiss, in partnership with Leeds Arts University, designed to broaden horizons and deepen creative practice. 

The session began with an engaging insight into life at Leeds Arts University. Jayne shared what students could expect from studying in a specialist creative environment, highlighting pathways available post-16 and encouraging ambition beyond the classroom. Students were particularly excited to hear about the university’s upcoming summer schools, spanning disciplines such as gaming, creative writing, 3D design and sculpture - valuable opportunities to nurture both talent and curiosity. 

Rooted firmly in the school’s commitment to scholarship and character, the workshop then moved into a hands-on exploration of screen printing. Jayne carefully modelled the process, demonstrating how simple materials like embroidery hoops, screen mesh and hand-cut stencils, could be transformed into powerful artistic tools when combined with acrylic paint and screen-printing medium. Students applied these techniques to support their upcoming GCSE ‘food’ module, producing striking, multi-layered prints of apples, dragon fruit, tomatoes and confectionery. The process required thoughtful decision-making: from composition and colour choices to the careful layering of stencils. While more time-intensive than other methods, the technique encouraged patience, precision and pride in craftsmanship. 

Importantly, the workshop reinforced a key principle of both art and the wider Dixons ethos: resilience. Students were reminded that great art rarely emerges perfectly on the first attempt. Instead, it is shaped through trial, error and the courage to try again. In a subject where outcomes can be unpredictable, mistakes often become moments of discovery and happy accidents that lead to unexpected and exciting results. By creating a classroom culture where students are supported to take risks and fail safely, teachers empower them to grow not only as artists, but as learners. Curiosity remains at the heart of this journey; it is the driving force behind experimentation, innovation and personal expression, particularly at GCSE level. 

The results of the workshop were exceptional. Students produced vibrant, layered prints that demonstrated both technical skill and creative flair. Many have already expressed a keen interest in continuing to explore screen printing within their coursework, which is a testament to the impact of the experience.
