Year 11 geography students explore Hornsea!

Our Year 11 Geography students recently travelled to Hornsea on the Yorkshire coast to complete important fieldwork for their GCSE Geography Paper 3.

The expedition gave students the opportunity to take the geographical knowledge they have developed throughout their time at Dixons Trinity Chapeltown and apply it to a real-world environment. Fieldwork is an important part of the GCSE Geography course, allowing students to develop the practical skills needed to collect, present and analyse geographical data.

During their visit, students collected primary data and used a range of geographical techniques to investigate the coastal environment. This provided an opportunity to revisit and strengthen knowledge from earlier years, making connections between topics and applying their understanding to a real location. The fieldwork also supported students in developing their statistical skills. Collecting their own data gave them the opportunity to work with geographical information first-hand, consider patterns and trends, and use evidence to support their conclusions.

This practical experience is particularly valuable as students prepare for Paper 3, where they will be expected to demonstrate their understanding of fieldwork techniques, data presentation and analysis.

Hornsea is a seaside town on the Holderness Coast in East Yorkshire and is an important location for studying coastal processes and management. The area provides a clear opportunity for students to investigate how the coastline changes and how different strategies are used to manage the effects of coastal erosion. By studying the coastline first-hand, students were able to see how the processes they have learnt about in the classroom affect real places and communities.

We were extremely proud of how well our students conducted themselves throughout the expedition. They represented the academy exceptionally well, demonstrating our values of hard work, trust and fairness while working independently and collaboratively in the field. Students thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to learn outside the classroom and spend time by the coast. The expedition was a valuable experience that strengthened both their geographical knowledge and their confidence in applying their skills.
